F.A.B. 5

Five Artists Blazing — the clinic collective Bam Bam co-founded to bring mentorship and live performance education to aspiring musicians. Born from a belief that the next generation of sidemen deserves real guidance from working professionals, not YouTube tutorials.

F.A.B. 5 operates at the intersection of education and performance — live clinic events where working musicians demonstrate, explain, and teach the craft of professional sideman (supporting musician) work. Not theory. Not nostalgia. The actual techniques that get you hired and kept.

1
Groove First — Always
The foundational law

Before fills, before dynamics, before anything — establish the groove. A drummer who rushes to impress will never be called back. A drummer who locks the pocket gets invited to every session, every tour, every year.

2
Serve The Song
Not your ego

The song is the mission. Your personal preferences — your favorite fills, your signature lick — are completely irrelevant unless they serve the song. The greatest compliment a sideman can receive is: "I didn't notice the drums."

3
Know When To Ride
Restraint is technique

Moving to the ride cymbal at the right moment — opening a section, building space, pulling back from the hi-hat intensity — is one of the most underrated skills in live drumming. It requires listening more than playing.

4
Mentor The Next
Legacy lives in students

Every working musician has a responsibility to the next generation. F.A.B. 5 exists because Bam Bam refused to let the knowledge he earned through 25+ years of professional work stay locked in his own hands. Legacy is not a trophy. It is a teacher.

"Every master drummer I respected gave something back to the next wave. That is not charity — that is the nature of craft. You are only keeping it alive if you pass it forward with the same seriousness it was given to you."
